Becca’s Closet collected prom dresses today in Swiftwater

April, 29, 2012 on Pocono Record: http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120429/NEWS/120429763

Pocono Mountain East High School senior, Nia Rametta will be collecting gently used prom and bridesmaids dresses for the local chapter of Becca’s Closet at the Teen Dream Expo on from 1-4 p.m. today at The Garden at desaki on Route 611 in Swiftwater.

Rametta, two year leader of the local chapter of Becca’s Closet, will be attending the Teen Dream Expo to raise awareness of the organization which was founded in 2003, and honors the memory of Rebecca Kirtman of Florida, who put together a dress drive at her high school and was tragically killed in a car accident shortly after distributing the gowns.

The dresses collected at the Teen Dream Expo will eventually be distributed, next year, to girls who might not otherwise be able to afford to buy a formal dress for prom. Each person who attends the Expo and donates a dress to Becca’s Closet will be entered to win a styling session by Dawn of New York in Stroudsburg.

This will likely be Rametta’s last collection effort as she will be passing the torch to another Pocono teen upon graduation this spring.

Pocono events to raise funds for cancer

August 2, 2010 on Pocono Record: http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100802/NEWS/8020316

BARTONSVILLE — The last thing any 25- or 30-year-old wants to think about is getting cancer. But with the new technology available to help early detection — especially locally — health care officials insist it's something they need to be aware of.To showcase some of the advances medical technology has made and to raise money for the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, the Lounge Nite Club in Bartonsville will hold a benefit volleyball tournament at its new, outdoor, bar-side sand court this month.

Just north on Route 611, desaki Restaurant and Dance Club in Swiftwater will donate proceeds from cover charges and its food to the center."We are finding more and more young people are suffering from cancer," said Francine Constable, the oncology manager at the current cancer center. "We had a woman in her mid-20s who works in our office who had breast cancer. People need to be aware that the sooner we can catch it, the better the survival chances."The Hughes Cancer Center is about to start a public capital campaign to raise money for a new building. The proposed 59,000-square-foot center would consolidate all of the hospital's cancer services and currently is scheduled to open in late 2012.The center already has secured some government funding and now is looking to the public for help, though hospital officials would not reveal the goal for its capital campaign. The younger generation will be important to getting that money together, and for most all future charitable giving, according to Ricky Durst, a development associate for the Pocono Health Foundation.Reaching out to places like local bars could be the place to do it, he said. Steve Ertle, the owner of The Lounge, said different types of events like a sand volleyball tournament could be the push a younger person needs to get involved with charities."It's not that they don't want to, but they might not even know how to get involved and donate," Ertle said. "This is something that can almost be training for them to be philanthropic."The tournament will be held Aug. Friday to Sunday, at the Lounge at the Comfort Inn in Bartonsville starting at 4 p.m. each day.

It's not the only local fundraising and awareness program aimed at younger people. The Hughes Center also will be the recipient of cover charge proceeds from the desaki Restaurant and Dance Club.Every Friday through Sept. 3, the entire cover charge and 20 percent of the food and beverage bill will go toward the campaign when a guest mentions "PMC Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center.""We hope that the community will rally to support this cause and help foster growth in our backyard," said desaki owner Vincent Trapasso.Ertle said he got involved because he's had personal experiences, especially losing his father to the disease and traveling to health centers around the eastern part of the state to get him treatment.Today, the care he would have needed is located at the Hughes Cancer Center."Driving two hours to Geisinger in Danville or to Philadelphia, that puts a strain on everyone," Ertle said. "I've seen what it can do to people."

Two local businesses join forces to pour on the flavor.

Swiftwater, PA June 10, 2011: Barley Creek Brewing Company and desaki Restaurant & Dance Club have teamed up to offer customers the best of both worlds. Friday, June 10th at 7pm Barley Creek will launch the locally brewed “desaki Lager” at desaki. Beginning at 7pm the first 100 people who are of legal drinking age will have the opportunity to sample the exclusive desaki Lager for free. The dynamic duo will also be revealing the much anticipated winner of the desaki Lager label design contest at 7:30. After dozens of submissions by amateur local artists one winner will have their design featured on the label of the 22oz. desaki Lager bottle.
The idea of brewing a beer just for desaki came after the two restaurant’s successful fore into cross marketing this past February when Barley Creek began to serve fresh sushi prepared on site by one of desaki’s master sushi chefs. This marriage led to the discovery that Barley Creek’s distinctive brew style was a great companion to desaki’s sushi. Somehow, they knew they could make it even better, with a beer that was designed to be paired with seafood. “The desaki Lager is crisp and refreshing. We used noble hops in the recipe for an added spice that cuts through seafood dishes the way citrus does”, said Barley’s Brew master, Bobby Fluegel. desaki Lager will be available at both Barley Creek and desaki restaurant. “I believe that this type of joint venture is the new direction of marketing in the Poconos said Christina Rodis-Durst, desaki’s Director of Public Relations and Events. “A rising tide floats all boats and we hope to ride the wave of these turbulent economic waters with strong partnerships and innovative ideas. We are so proud to have our boat latched to Barley Creek.

The idea for Shiro seemed simple enough.
April 1, 2010 in Pocono Record: http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100401/NEWS/4010337

By Michael Sadowski

SWIFTWATER — The idea for Shiro seemed simple enough.

Some hibachis, some drinks, some dancing, some entertainment, and bingo, a new family restaurant and nightclub was born in the Poconos.

Owner Vincent Trapasso, no novice when it comes to building restaurants in the Poconos, thought it was the formula for success — he just didn't realize how successful it would be.

Because Shiro, on Route 611, has been such a hit, it has to change its name to allow for possible expansion or even franchising, restaurant officials said.

The restaurant welcomes in its new name — "desaki" — with a private event this afternoon at the restaurant.

The name change is to avoid confusion with other Shiro restaurants around the country, Trapasso said.

"We've found about 20 other Shiro restaurants in California, Arizona, Texas, New York, everywhere," he said. "We've done extensive research, and there are no other desakis. Certainly not in America."

Trapasso did not reveal the locations he is thinking about expanding to, but said it would not be another Poconos location.

This is his second restaurant in the region — he was once the owner of the former downtown Stroudsburg nightclub Hoola Hoops, which closed in 2005. He also owned restaurants in other areas.

Right now, desaki is his focus.

"We have been extremely successful here," he said. "If we're to continue in this direction, then there would be strong possibilities we could expand. And if we explore becoming a public company or becoming a franchise in other areas, this is a step we had to take."

The new name is not without meaning. Trapasso said since he opened in October 2008, patrons and tourist experts in the region have said Shiro is more than just a restaurant. It even runs shuttle buses from nearby resorts and hotels like Great Wolf.

Because it has a dance club and provides other entertainment in a 12,000-square-foot facility, it is sometimes referred to as a "destination."

Desaki is the Japanese word for destination.

"From birth, it hasn't been just a restaurant," he said. "We've worked to make sure it was more than that."

That effort isn't over, according to Christina Rodis-Durst, the restaurant's director of public relations and event planning. Just because there is an eye on expanding doesn't mean the local experience will be any less inviting.

"The focus is on perfecting this business," she said. "We're always going to continue to strive to make it better."
